Due to the European Union’s restrictions against lead-containing materials actual challenges for material researchers are given. Bearings need tribologically active components. These could be added by alloying or formed due to diverse surface treatments. Joining technics with active solder lead to electrically conductive connections. Brittle phases inside the layer should be avoided. Furthermore, there are investigations concerning methods, namely the anodization, which form thicker oxide films on metallic substrates. Especially the influence of element variations should be investigated.
